Mason Greenwood could save Man United a lot of money this summer after forward surpasses Wayne Rooney record vs Aston Villa

Man United’s summer window

Manchester United are almost certain set to claim 2nd spot in the Premier League this season – their highest finish under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and joint-highest in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

United, though, are nevertheless still some distance from truly challenging for the Premier League title.

They are certainly heading the right direction, but the Red Devils need to bolster their squad in a number of areas this summer.

Most Man United fans would likely agree that the right-wing, centre-forward, central midfield and centre-backs spots are positions which need addressing.

Mason Greenwood continues to shine

It is of course unlikely that the Reds will be able to sign top, top players in all four of those positions in just one transfer window.

Mason Greenwood’s recent form, though, suggests that he could end up saving the Manchester outfit considerable money in the near future.

It has been obvious for some time now that Anthony Martial is not good enough to be the main centre-forward option at United.

Edinson Cavani, on the other hand, has proven that he is exactly the type of striker required to lead the line for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.

The main issues with Cavani, however, are of course his age (34) and fitness. But, if Man United manage to keep hold of the Uruguayan for another year, it could prove to be a huge coup.

Cavani, as already mentioned, cannot play 40+ games a season anymore. But, if Mason Greenwood continues to shine, he could easily act as understudy to the former PSG man.

Unlike Martial, it is apparent that Greenwood boasts striker instincts, and a keen eye for goal.

The Englishman put the visitors ahead against Aston Villa with another quality finish on Sunday, his 6th goal in his last six league games:

The strike also saw Greenwood become the highest-scoring Man United teenager in Premier League history, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record of 15:

The 19-year-old just needs a bit more time to hone his craft, and there would be no better way to do that than to learn from someone like Cavani.

So, instead of spending big on a striker this summer, United should push for Cavani to sign a new deal, before using the South American and Greenwood as their two no.9s.

This would allow the Manchester outfit to spend funds elsewhere, perhaps on someone like Jadon Sancho?

The signing of Sancho would mean Greenwood would not have to deputise out right as much, allowing him more chances in his natural centre-forward spot, where the starlet looks set to excel over the coming years.
