That concludes our commentary of the Serie A fixture between Juventus and Inter! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Juventus will contest the Coppa Italia final against Atalanta on Wednesday, before wrapping up their season on Saturday at Bologna. Inter close their successful campaign at home against Udinese.
Juventus emerge from the incredibly dramatic 90 minutes at the Allianz Stadium with a 3-2 win, after what must have been referee Gianpaolo Calvarese’s busiest evening of the year. Three yellow cards and two penalties in the first-half was met by an equally stunning second frame which saw six yellow cards, two sendings off, a Chiellini own goal allowed after VAR intervention and an 88th minute Cuadrado spot-kick, which proved to be the winner. Juve’s Derby d’Italia win sees them jump Napoli into fourth place and into a Champions League spot ahead of matches tomorrow for Milan and the aforementioned Partenopei. The loss for Inter is merely a statistic, as Conte’s side have already clinched the Scudetto.
90′ + 4′ FULL-TIME: JUVENTUS 3-2 INTER.
90′ + 3′ The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the 90 for stoppages.
90′ + 2′ BROZOVIC IS NOW SENT OFF! BOTH SIDES DOWN TO 10! In order to prevent a counter-attack, Brozovic goes lunging into a tackle on Cuadrado, which catches the full-back squarely. The cynical challenge draws the 10th yellow card of the game, but its Brozovic’s second of the evening – sending him to the locker room.
90′ Cuadrado is now booked for a foul in midfield on Brozovic – the ninth of the match!
88′ Brozovic is now booked for giving the referee a piece of his mind. It’s been quite the match for the referee!
88′ GOAL! 3-2 JUVENTUS! Cuadrado steps up in the absence of Ronaldo and tucks his penalty away neatly!
87′ PENALTY TO JUVENTUS! INCREDIBLE SCENES! The Bianconeri take the kick-off and go straight back up the pitch down the right. Cuadrado gets into the penalty area and flashes his quick feet before going over due to a clumsy Perisic tackle! The third spot-kick of the game!
85′ Chiellini is booked for having words with the referee following the overturned goal.
83′ INTER EQUALISE AFTER A VAR REVIEW! 2-2! Lukaku managed to get into the six-yard box ahead of Chiellini, and the ball is turned into the net underneath Szczesny, but the referee blew his whistle immediately for a foul, as Lukaku appeared to grab the centre-back’s shirt. After protestations from both sides, the referee has a look at the monitor and gives the goal as there was no foul!
82′ SZCZESNY KEEPS IT LEVEL! Perisic swings a delightful cross to the six-yard box for Vecino, who redirects the ball but puts his header into the path of the goalkeeper – who palms it down and away from the danger area!
80′ The yellow carded Bastoni is withdrawn with 10 minutes remaining, as Conte sends Vecino – a midfielder – into the fray.
79′ Brozovic puts a cross into the penalty area from a central position for Lukaku, but again Chiellini is able to get in front of his man to head away the danger.
77′ Bastoni is booked for a bad foul on Cuadrado in midfield.
77′ Barella swivels inside the 18-yard box and whacks a low, left-footed shot towards goal but misses the target by considerable distance.
76′ Martinez backheels a loose ball in Juve’s penalty area for Perisic, but the winger sends his curling effort far too high to trouble Szczesny.
74′ Martinez is booked for catching the ankle of De Ligt with his studs during an attempt to steer a loose ball towards goal. It doesn’t appear intentional but it is a dangerous one.
73′ Inter respond with a switch of their own as they look to pull themselves level. Eriksen is replaced by Sensi.
70′ Pirlo makes a defensive change as he looks to cling onto the lead, as Demiral is brought on for Chiesa.
70′ It’s not often that Ronaldo is replaced, but down to 10 men with 20 minutes to go Pirlo is looking to inject some fresh legs into his side. Morata is the man chosen to come on.
68′ Perisic looks to beat his man on the left and whip in a cross, but Danilo eases ahead of the winger with expertise, stealing the ball and relieving the danger.
66′ The free-kick is taken quickly to Bastoni, who looks to cross it in immediately for Lukaku. The forward is unable to get to the ball ahead of Chiellini however, and opts to foul the centre-back, giving Juve a chance to clear their lines.
64′ Ronaldo catches the heel of Eriksen, giving Inter a free-kick outside the penalty area in a good spot for a cross.
62′ The Bianconeri are squeezing the space around their penalty area and making it very difficult for Inter to build through the middle. It’ll be a real test of Hakimi and Perisic’s ability to create as the flanks look the likeliest option.
60′ Ronaldo is now the lone forward as Pirlo has organised his side into a 4-4-1. Juventus will be made to suffer in the final 30 minutes as Inter will pour forward looking to make the numerical advantage count.
58′ Pirlo makes a substitution immediately, looking to solidify his midfield. Kulusevski is the man to make way, as McKennie is sent on.
57′ Eriksen takes the free-kick and sends a dipping effort to his left, but Szczesny scrambles well and manages to make a clean catch at the first time of asking.
55′ BENTANCUR SENT OFF! Things get even more incredible just before the hour, as a shoulder-to-shoulder between Bentancur and Lukaku sends the forward to the ground. The referee tries playing advantage but brings play back and shows the Uruguay midfielder a second yellow for the infraction on Lukaku! Juve down to 10 men for the final 35 minutes!
54′ Hakimi gets into a great position inside the penalty area after a lovely one-two in midfield but he sends his far-post cross too high for Martinez, who’s unable to get to it despite a leap.
52′ WHAT A CHANCE! Eriksen finds Martinez inside the penalty area, and the striker is able to take a touch to set himself before curling a wicked effort to the far corner between two defenders. It’s a wonderful hit but it misses the target narrowly much to Szczesny’s relief.
50′ Hakimi looks to block De Ligt’s clearance and win the ball back high up the pitch, but a shoulder barge from the wing-back gives Juventus a free-kick to clear their lines.
48′ Eriksen launches it down the flank for Perisic, but an awkward backpass from Danilo goes over the head of the oncoming Szczesny in a nervy moment. Chiellini gets back and prevents the own goal, but it’s a worrying communication breakdown.
46′ Inter get the match restarted from the kick-off!
46′ Perisic replaces the booked Darmian at half-time.
Pirlo’s half-time team talk has been made much easier thanks to Cuadrado, who has given Juventus the all-important lead. With the three points a requirement, it will be fascinating to see whether Juventus opt to hold onto their lead, or look for insurance in the second half. The Inter attack hasn’t looked its sharpest today, though both Lukaku and Martinez are clinical and only need one chance. With 45 minutes left to play the drama certainly hasn’t disappointed!
A goal with the last kick of the half eases the burden on Juventus, as the Bianconeri enter the half-time interval with a 2-1 lead. Ronaldo opened the scoring after 24 minutes from the rebound, after his penalty was stopped initially by a diving Handanovic. Inter took just 11 minutes to reassert themselves after Martinez was brought down in the penalty area by De Ligt – giving Lukaku the opportunity to level the match from 12-yards out. Juve’s persistence paid off however, as Cuadrado was able to retake the crucial lead with seconds left in the first 45 minutes.
45′ + 4′ HALF-TIME: JUVENTUS 2-1 INTER.
45′ + 3′ AN INCREDIBLE STRIKE GIVES JUVE THE EDGE! 2-1! Cuadrado’s first goal of the season couldn’t come at a better time! Kulusevski’s attempted pullback for Ronaldo receives a slight deflection which puts it at the edge of the penalty spot for the full-back, who runs onto it and smashes a shot into the roof of the net!
45′ + 1′ The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added for stoppages.
44′ Cuadrado’s corner isn’t a great effort, as Martinez is able to rise highest and nod away the trouble at the front post.
43′ Cuadrado takes a free-kick from the right low to the far side of the penalty area for Chiesa, who cuts inside and blasts a shot which takes a deflection and goes out for a corner.
41′ A quick free-kick in midfield catches the Inter defence off-guard as the set-piece is launched into the penalty area for Ronaldo, but Bastoni manages to get just enough of a touch to the ball to send it back to Handanovic.
39′ Inter’s last win away from home against Juventus in Serie A was back in November 2012 (3-1 thanks to a Diego Milito brace and a Palacio goal) under Antonio Conte.
37′ Lukaku tracks back into his own half and puts a sliding challenge in on Kulusevski which sends the ball out for a throw-in. The striker is doing everything he can for his team, including making tackles that a centre-back would be proud of!
35′ LUKAKU MAKES NO MISTAKE! 1-1! The Inter forward notches his 23rd goal of the season, sending Szczesny the wrong way as he coolly slots his finish into the bottom left! Game on once again!
34′ PENALTY TO INTER NOW! UNBELIEVABLE! Martinez goes down inside the penalty area off the ball, and after a VAR review it appears De Ligt caught the heel of the forward – sending him to the turf! The referee points to the spot – can Lukaku bring the game level?!
32′ Danilo attempts a left-footed drive from outside the area, but it fails to get anywhere near Handanovic’s goal – much to Ronaldo’s frustration as he was waiting for a delivery at the far post.
30′ After winning 2-0 in the reverse fixture, Inter could win two consecutive Serie A games against Juventus for the first time since 2003/04 under Alberto Zaccheroni.
28′ Hakimi looks to play Brozovic through into the penalty area with a neat pass after opting against a left-footed shot, but Sandro comes across to steal back possession and alleviate the pressure.
26′ nter have their work cut out for them after conceding an early goal. The result certainly helps to ease Juve’s nerves, as Pirlo’s side have vaulted back into fourth place as things stand.
24′ Ronaldo sends his kick far too centrally to beat Handanovic, as the forward sees his penalty saved by the goalkeeper.
24′ Handanovic makes the initial stop! The goalkeeper guesses correctly and palms down the spot-kick with both hands, temporarily denying Ronaldo!
24′ GOAL! Ronaldo doesn’t convert from the penalty spot after a great diving save from Handanovic, but the forward does well to follow the rebound and tuck it home at the second time of asking. 1-0 Juventus!
23′ Darmian is shown a yellow card for bringing Chiellini down inside the area.
23′ PENALTY TO JUVENTUS! The referee points to the spot as Darmian was adjudged to have brought Chiellini down inside the penalty area! Can Juve take the lead from the penalty spot?!
22′ Juventus are asking for a penalty after Chiellini was brought to the ground following Cuadrado’s corner-kick. The referee doesn’t think it’s a foul, however VAR has now gotten involved.
20′ Bentancur’s cynical tug of Martinez’s kit during a counter-attack draws the attention of the referee, who brandishes a yellow card for the second time in the match.
19′ Ronaldo looks to cut inside and shoot from 25 yards out, but Barella and Brozovic immediately get in front of the striker to close the angle – forcing a pass out to Cuadrado on the wing.
17′ Play is stopped for Lukaku, who remains on the ground after landing awkwardly following an aerial duel with Rabiot. The striker looks like he’ll need a minute to gather himself, but it shouldn’t keep the third highest scorer in the league out for long.
15′ Brozovic takes an Inter corner short to Eriksen, who eventually swings a delivery into the penalty area from the corner of the penalty area. It’s a good delivery for Bastoni, but the Juve defence is able to clear the danger.
13′ Hakimi is down holding his shin after being stepped on accidentally by Kulusevski. The Sweden international receives the first yellow card of the match.
11′ BLOCKED! Juventus put together their first real opportunity, after Danilo’s cross is met at the back post by Chiesa, who nods it across the face of goal. Kulusevski is there to turn it towards goal, but an Inter defender does just enough to stop it before going over the line!
9′ Conte’s formation with five in midfield is causing Juventus no shortage of problems in the build-up, as the middle of the park is packed with bodies. Rabiot and Bentancur will need to work even harder to get onto the ball and work space for team-mates, as they aren’t being given anything.
7′ Inter look comfortable in possession, knocking it around from left to right and front to back without much concern. Having already wrapped up the title Conte’s side will be able to play with a bit more freedom and confidence; a stark contrast to Juve’s urgent need for goals.
5′ Ronaldo picks up the ball in midfield and launches a pass forward for Kulusevski, but again the well-placed Inter defence is able to shield the ball for Handanovic. Ronaldo is certainly dropping deep in the opening five minutes to get on the ball and affect play – though he’s always more useful closer to goal.
3′ Kulusevski receives a pass on the edge of the 18-yard box and looks to power past De Vrij, but the centre-back uses his strength to win the ball cleanly, sending the forward to the turf in the process
1′ Juventus get the match underway from the kick-off! We’re sure to have a dramatic 90 minutes in store!
Inter make six alterations from their 3-1 demolition of Roma, as Conte puts out a team that more closely resembles their first-choice XI. Handanovic returns between the posts sending Radu to the bench, while De Vrij and Bastoni replace Ranocchia and D’Ambrosio in defence. Hakimi gets the nod at wing-back ahead of Perisic, while Eriksen is preferred to Vecino in midfield. The final switch is in attack, where an injury to Alexis Sanchez means Martinez partners Lukaku.
Juventus make four changes from their 3-1 victory over Sassuolo in midweek. Buffon is dropped in favour of Szczesny, while one veteran centre-back replaces another as Chiellini enters the XI for Bonucci. Bentancur is back in midfield sending Arthur to the bench, while Cuadrado takes a place on the right wing, pushing Kulusevski into a striker role instead of Dybala.
INTER SUBS: Andrea Pinamonti, Daniele Padelli, Ionut Radu, Ashley Young, Matias Vecino, Danilo D’Ambrosio, Andrea Ranocchia, Roberto Gagliardini, Ivan Perisic, Stefano Sensi.
INTER XI (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan De Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni; Achraf Hakimi, Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic, Christian Eriksen, Matteo Darmian; Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez.
JUVENTUS SUBS: Federico Bernardeschi, Carlo Pinsoglio, Alvaro Morata, Leonardo Bonucci, Felix Correia, Weston McKennie, Aaron Ramsey, Paulo Dybala, Arthur, Gianluigi Buffon, Merih Demiral.
JUVENTUS XI (4-4-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Alex Sandro, Giorgio Chiellini, Matthijs de Ligt, Danilo; Federico Chiesa, Adrien Rabiot, Rodrigo Bentancur, Juan Cuadrado; Dejan Kulusevski, Cristiano Ronaldo.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at the team news, starting with the hosts!
The title may be wrapped up for Inter, but there’s no doubt they’ll be giving in their all against rivals Juventus, whose nine-year Scudetto run was ended by the man who began it; Antonio Conte. His side certainly haven’t let complacency sink in despite nothing to play for, beating Sampdoria 5-1 last week before a 3-1 thrashing of Roma on Wednesday.
It’s now or never for Juventus’ Champions League hopes, as Andrea Pirlo’s side will almost surely have to win both of their last two fixtures to give themselves a shot at qualifying for Europe’s elite competition, as they sit one point back of Napoli and three behind Milan. A convincing 3-1 win over Sassuolo in midweek is sure to buoy the side’s confidence, though it did little for their league standing as the Rossoneri, Atalanta and Napoli all notched victories as well.
